Hello everyone, welcome back to my second blog! Thank you to everyone who supported The Way We C It’s website launch last week! It was a hectic week trying to put everything together for the website and preparing for Season 2, but it was all worth it. If you are reading this be sure to check out Episode 21 and 22 available on all podcast platforms (Click here to listen). I had a tough time trying to figure out what I should write about this week. It has been a long week for me with classes starting this week and trying to learn the ropes at my counseling internship I recently started last week. I already have tons of readings due next week and I haven’t started reading them (I’ll get to them eventually lol).
One thing that helped me get through this week was incorporating self-care activities throughout the week. You probably have heard the term “self-care” numerous times by now. It is something many people are talking about being that the pandemic has and still is impacting our mental health. Our lives have completely changed and we’re technically in survival mode trying to adjust to this “new normal.” So what did I do this week to get me through? I worked out, played in the snow with my cousins, journaled, practiced gratitude, and took a hot jacuzzi bath. This may seem like a lot for some, but this is what works for me. Working in a field where you are constantly helping others can be draining and I have learned that to help others effectively you have to take care of yourself first. I have also learned to not only incorporate self-care when you are stressed but incorporate it into your daily routine. Understanding this concept changed my perspective from saying, “I don’t have time to relax.” Instead, I now try to incorporate things I enjoy doing into my daily routine. Additionally, I want to note that I am not perfect and there are some days where I have a lot going on and I don’t have the time to take care of myself. On these days I just make sure I bounce back the next day and keep it going. So how do I incorporate self-care into my daily routine? Every week is different depending on what is going on in my life, but there are some activities I make sure I do every week: workout, journal, practice gratitude (write what I am thankful for). So yeah, this is my perspective of self-care and how I apply it to my life. If you’re reading this I challenge you to take five minutes of your day to do something you enjoy doing. Here is a list of 99 coping skills if you are not sure what to do (99 Coping Skills). Comment below on what self-care activity you plan on doing!
